HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (2), or short (2). Culms erect (3/3); 17–84.62–150 cm long. Culm-internodes terete (1/2), or elliptical in section (1/2). Lateral branches lacking (2/2). Ligule an eciliate membrane (3), or a fringe of hairs (1). Leaf-blades linear, or lanceolate (2). Leaf-blade midrib conspicuous (1/1).

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes.

Racemes borne along a central axis; not compacted (2), or in a multilateral false spike (2); erect (2), or ascending (2); unilateral. Rhachis angular (2), or semiterete (2). Spikelet packing crowded (1), or contiguous (2), or lax (1).

Spikelets solitary (1), or in pairs, or in threes (1). Fertile spikelets pedicelled; 2 in the cluster (2/2). Pedicels linear (2/3), or oblong (1/3), or clavate (1/3).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets elliptic (2), or oblong (2); dorsally compressed; 2.49–3.186–3.6 mm long; falling entire.

GLUMES Glumes one the lower absent or obscure (2), or two (3); shorter than spikelet (3), or reaching apex of florets (2); thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate (1/3), or ovate (2/3); hyaline (3/3); without keels (1/1); 0 -veined (3/3), or 1 -veined (1/3). Lower glume lateral veins absent (3/3). Lower glume surface without pits (3/3); hirsute (2/3), or villous (1/3). Upper glume oblong (3), or ovate (1); membranous; without keels; 5 -veined, or 6–7 -veined (3). Upper glume lateral veins ribbed. Upper glume surface pilose (1), or hirsute (2), or villous (2); with simple hairs (3), or tubercle-based hairs (1). Upper glume apex obtuse (3), or acute (3).

FLORETS Basal sterile florets male; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret oblong (3), or ovate (1); membranous; 5 -veined, or 6–7 -veined (2); ribbed; obtuse (1/2), or acute (1/2). Fertile lemma elliptic (2), or oblong (1), or ovate (1); coriaceous; without keel; wingless; 5 -veined (2/2). Lemma surface smooth (3), or papillose (1); unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma margins involute. Lemma apex acute; papillose (1), or scabrous (1), or pubescent. Palea gaping; 1 length of lemma; coriaceous; 2 -veined (2/2).
