Rio Tinto's position statement on Biodiversity

'Rio Tinto recognises the importance of the conservation and responsible management of biological diversity as a business and societal issue. We aim to have a net positive impact on biodiversity'.

Rio Tinto further commits to:

  • The prevention, minimisation and mitigation of biodiversity risks throughout the business cycle
  • Responsible stewardship of the land they manage
  • The identification and pursuit of biodiversity conservation opportunities
  • The involvement of communities and other constituencies in their management of biodiversity issues

The company launched its Biodiversity Strategy at the World Conservation Union Conference in Bangkok (November 2004). Rio Tinto has seven guiding principles to support the company's position on Biodiversity.
