Dear Jeremy, we are pleased to hear that the website has been of assistance with your research into the Wallich family. Thank you for the information you have provided on the pastel portrait in your possession. We have done a little research to see if we hold any portraits of Wallich’s wife or of his daughter-in-law in order to identify the sitter in your picture. Unfortunately we have not had any success but wondered if you might be able to email us a reference image for the portrait in order for us to undertake more research? We may be able to estimate the date of the work from the style of clothing worn by the sitter as you suggest. Alternatively, we can try and investigate the artist responsible for the work in order to find an approximate date. Thank you for offering to visit to show the original picture; we would be interested to do some further research in advance of a visit to see if we can offer you more information.

Your information and reference http://www.geni.com/people/Nathaniel-Wallich/6000000010484310112 Has produced a lot of information on Nathaniel fathers and on Nathaniel. Interesting he was named Nathan soon after birth. I think, now, that my pastel portrait is of Caroline Elizabeth Norton, Charles Wallich's Wife. It came to me via my Grandmother, Beatrice Harriet Brooke (nee Wallich), Charles. Daughter. Not Sophia Wallich nee Collins 1797-1876 I hope to visit you shortly, if I may. I will bring a copy. Perhaps you could advise on probability, Perhaps dating her by her clothing. Best wishes and thank you. Jeremy.

I am sorry that I have not thanked you for your research into the name Wallick. There was some correspondance, a few years ago, about a pastel portrait of Sophie Wallich, nee Collins, which I have. I think that it was Todd Kelly that was involved. Is it of any interest to you? Kind regards, Jeremy Lawson.

Dear Jeremy, In response to your query, our colleagues at the British Library have been checking through their manuscript records and have found that Wallich always seemed to be addressed and to have signed himself as Wallich, although he appears in the printed East India Company list as Wallick until 1829. The Parliamentary Select Committee report of 1832 also spells him as Wallick. We therefore wonder if Wallick might have been a variant or phonetic spelling as opposed to a formal name change? The following genealogical website presents an interesting overview of his earlier names: http://www.geni.com/people/Nathaniel-Wallich/6000000010484310112 Best wishes, Kew Library, Art & Archives team.

I will read your presentation with great interest. I have tried to send you an e-mail but it disapeared. Nathanilal was my Great Grat Granfather. I have collected a lot of information, much of it from you. When I have read you website I wil contact you for any additional information. One Question-When did he change his name from Wallick to Wallich? Best wishes, Jeremy Lawson
