Richard Spruce's Plantae Amazonicae. Domestic Uses. (1855), p. 61:

A noble clean growing tree with rather scaly back, slightly tinged with red, which gives the trunk the aspect of that of Scotch Fir. As in many cannels both bark and wood have a fine scent enduring many years.
