The New Guinea Collection

Photograph of a Papua New Guinea Village

Maimafu village

Photographer:

Richard Rees

Date:

August 2003

Location:

Crater Mountain Wildlife Management Area, Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea

Children play in Maimafu Village; a community in the remote valleys of the Central Highlands Province. In the background, traditional thatched huts can be seen. The walls of these are constructed using woven bamboo mats.

This village is in an area of Papua New Guinea which receives around six metres of rain each year. It is accessible only by light aircraft, landing on the steepest runway in the country.
