Notes accompanying object: 'Rose petal beads: The black beads in this rosary are made entirely from rose petals, which are said to retain their scent. The petals are minced many times, after which they are placed in an iron tin to give the ebony colour. The pulp is then shaped into beads of the required size which are air-dried on large pins or knitting needles.'

Plant information:

Deciduous or sometimes evergreen shrubs with arching, erect or scrambling, sometimes trailing stems. Roses have been grown in China since 2700 BC.
