Selection of crude drugs from Hanbury's materia medica

 

These crude drugs are from Daniel Hanbury’s materia medica collection. The medicinal properties described below come from Theophilus Redwood’s Supplement to the Pharmacopoeia (1857). The specimens, clockwise from the left are as follows:

EUPHORBIACEAE Hyaenanche globosa. These fruits were given to Hanbury by Dr. Martius, they come from the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. The powdered fruit of this species had an interesting use as a poison for hyenas. EBC 42229

RANUNCULACEAE Clematis vitalba. Clematis was described as caustic and could cause blistering; however this species could be used as a treatment for ailments of the eye. EBC 41915

WINTERACEAE Drimys winteri. This pepper bark sample came to Hanbury from South America. Pepper bark was said to be sharp tasting and aromatic. It could be used against scurvy, vomiting and palsy. EBC 41985
