Dani penis sheath (gourd)

Dani penis sheath (gourd)

Catalogue no:

72992

Botanical classification:

CUCURBITACEAE

Donor:

Phil J. Cribb

Donation date:

28/02/1994

Geographical origin:

Wamesuk, Baliem Valley, Irian Jaya, Indonesia

Traditionally worn by New Guinea males, the penis sheath is frequently made from a gourd but may also be made from woven fibres, depending on the customs of the tribe. A great variety of forms are found between the different clans. Wearing of the penis sheath has become less and less frequent now, as western style dress has been adopted in many villages. This penis gourd was collected from the Dani tribe in the Baliem Valley of Irian Jaya, and is long and thin in shape.
