- These gambling sticks, collected by Dr. Newcombe, came in a set of 30 complete with a case. They were made by the Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) people of Hope Island . The gambling sticks, called 'Lebain' in the Kwakiutl language, are made from crabapple wood. In 1900, the Gardens purchased the item from Newcombe for $5.00.
