- This small gourd from Peking was used as a cage for fighting crickets, a gambling game once popular in China . This particular cricket cage was grown in a mould to produce its patterned surface. Dr. Lockhart donated two such cricket cages to the Collections. One is moulded with surface characters translated to mean pleasure, joy, or play, while the other has imitations of copper money or cash upon its surface.
