Specimen Notes:
  • This bark picture frame decorated with dyed porcupine quills was one of the items displayed at the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in 1886. It was probably made by the Mi'kmaq of eastern Canada , and it provides an excellent example of the way traditional styles and skills were meshed with new forms in order to appeal to a European market. Such a picture frame would have most likely been sold to a tourist as a souvenir.
