This carved club made by a hard wood was collected by Hugh Hastings Romilly, who was involved in the administration of British New Guinea during several periods of time in the early years of the British protectorate. At the time of collection, Romilly was the Deputy Special Commissioner for British New Guinea, and lived comfortably in Port Moresby. The club was collected in this region.

The club was presented to the British Museum by the Queensland Commission. Several other objects collected by Romilly were donated to Kew at the same time as this club; some of these have since been returned to the British Museum, or sent to other collections.
