In 1879 the India Museum in South Kensington closed. Most of its collections were absorbed by the Victoria and Albert Museum, but some were sent to the Gardens at Kew, including a collection of South and Southeast Asian Lacquerware. Two pen cases were among the items donated, said to be made of the wood of Palmyra Borassus flabiluformis .
