The sounding portion of this highly decorated Hinnari is made from two hollowed-out gourds. Gourds have been used by many societies for making musical instruments because of their ability to produce a resonating sound when hollow. This particular instrument was donated to the Collections by the India Museum, located in South Kensington before its closure in 1879. The India Museum was founded by the East India Company and showcased many foreign objects brought back to England. Upon its closure, most of the collection was absorbed by the Victoria and Albert Museum, with some items coming to Kew .
