Bonsai House - new glasshouse and display

A selection from the 50 trees in Kew’s Bonsai collection will be displayed in this glasshouse, which replaces an older structure that was in poor condition. Like their full-size counterparts, bonsai are happiest living outdoors so the display will change each week, showing off different specimens throughout the year.

The bonsai collection includes conifers, maples, a Japanese white pine, a rhododendron, beech and an oak tree. The smallest is a Cotoneaster horizontalis, just 10cm high, and the tallest is a Chinese quince standing around 60cm high.

The Bonsai collection which includes some of the finest bonsai trees in the country was kindly donated to Kew two years ago by Ruth Stafford-Jones, one of the most respected growers in Britain.

The Bonsai House is at the northern end of the order beds which are number 28 on the Visitor Map
