Sir Joseph Banks Building
This building is named after Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) who was the unofficial director of Kew before it became a public garden. Built on a three hectare site next to the river and opened in 1990, it was designed to blend into the Gardens. It is one of the largest earth-covered complexes to be built in this country: the surrounding soil provides insulation and conserves energy.
It houses our Economic Botany Collections, which comprise over 76,000 specimens of economically important plants and their products.
The Sir Joseph Banks Building is not open to the public.
