Conservation management depends on a thorough and accurate understanding of the species present at a site and how they respond to changing conditions and management practices. Seed quality testing

The Millennium Seed Bank has unparalleled expertise in seed quality testing of wild plant species. Our methods include:

  • digital x-ray testing of seed purity
  • germination testing
  • biochemical tests of seed viability, for example: tetrazolium chloride
  • dissection tests using binocular microscopes

We promote the use of high quality, appropriate-origin plant material by making available Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank UK native seed collections to organisations able to use the material successfully and make a genuine contribution to nature conservation in the UK.
