On 3 July 2003 the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew was officially inscribed on the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.

What is a World Heritage Site?

World Heritage Sites have been identified by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as being of international importance for the conservation of cultural and natural heritage.

There are currently 721 such sites in the world, including the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids at Giza and the Grand Canyon. The UK, together with its overseas territories, has 24 World Heritage Sites including the Tower of London, Stonehenge and Edinburgh Old and New Town.

In January 2002, the UK Government nominated the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
