What is a World Heritage Site?
World Heritage Sites have been identified by the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as being
of international importance for the conservation of cultural and
natural heritage.
There are currently 721 such sites in the world, including the
Great Wall of China, the Pyramids at Giza and the Grand Canyon.
The UK, together with its overseas territories, has 24 World Heritage
Sites including the Tower of London, Stonehenge and Edinburgh Old
and New Town.
In January 2002, the UK Government nominated the Royal Botanic
Gardens, Kew as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
