Discovery Volunteers
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew runs a Discovery programme for elderly
and disabled people. Please see our webpage: www.kew.org/education/discovery.html.
We look for people who enjoy working with elderly and disabled people,
who are keen to learn about Kew, about plants and have the ability to
convey this knowledge to people of mixed abilities.
We have recently expanded this programme and we
are not currently recruiting for additional volunteers.
1. Discovery Bus Guide
The Discovery Bus is a specially adapted vehicle which allows
us to offer tours of the Gardens to our less able
groups. It is larger than most mini-buses, carrying
up to 14 people, including two in wheelchairs, if required. Volunteer
guides accompany the driver and give a commentary en route.
2. Outreach Presenter
Volunteers participate in our outreach programme giving
illustrated talks about Kew to elderly and disabled
groups in the community, particularly during the
winter months. Outreach volunteers need to drive
their own cars but are provided with appropriate
equipment. Ideally outreach volunteers work in pairs.
3. Escort
Finally volunteers also accompany individuals who wish to
visit the Gardens but, because of visual or physical
impairment, are not able to do so on their own or
it may be that their companion/carer requires assistance.
This can involve pushing a wheelchair or offering
an arm. The volunteer is also be expected to give
a personalised tour en route.
If you are interested in future volunteer opportunities at Kew
check our volunteers page regularly.
