Social Responsibility
What does Kew Gardens do for the international community?
With projects and partnerships going on all over the world it is difficult
to know how to describe the breadth of the advice and support provided.
Aside from professional science collaborations and fieldwork, the Royal
Botanic Gardens, Kew plays a significant role as a training agency for
many different countries; helping less developed countries to build their
capacity for a more sustainable future, and providing direct training
in seed collection; controlling the trade in illegal imports; and horticultural
skills. The time taken by Kew staff in helping countries like South Africa,
Montserrat and Madagascar - to name but three - will make a real difference
to their future.
Individuals on the staff assist international charities to raise funds,
and in particular, the Director and his wife often host occasions that
boost awareness or raise cash for international organisations, such as
the African Bore Hole Project.
