William AitonHaving already trained as a gardener in the Chelsea Physic Garden, William Aiton was invited to take charge of a physic garden at Kew in 1759, approximately nine acres in size. After Sir Joseph Banks’ death in 1820 it was William Townsend Aiton, Aiton's son, who was responsible for the future of Kew. He retired in 1845. |
