JOB DETAILS:

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (Kew) is the world-leader in plant diversity science, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major visitor attraction that shows the importance of plants in all our lives. Kew’s mission is to inspire and deliver science-based plant conservation worldwide, enhancing the quality of life.

Medicinal Plant Names Services (MPNS) is an innovative project seeking to employ Kew’s rich digital resources to support regulatory authorities and professionals working in health and research and facilitating their provision of safer and more effective healthcare.  MPNS will for the first time establish a global and definitive index to the many names of medicinal plants as they are used throughout the world. This authoritative online MPNS resource will also underpin a suite of information services tailored to the needs of specific segments of our client and stakeholder community.

The current development phase of the project is both building and curating the MPNS Resource and piloting data services for third parties (clients and partners) including validation of the plant names within their own systems and enrichment of their plant name data.

The Data Services Officer will interact directly with clients and partners, employing their domain knowledge to interpret requests and data sets. They will document the needs, benefits and technical aspects of these services and where possible contribute to expanding both a) the audience with which MPNS engages and b) the specification of our suite of data services so as to better reflect demand. The post holder will be responsible for incorporating agreed subsets of our partner’s data sets into the MPNS resource and, together with the MPNS software developer, assume day to day responsibility for the data management of the MPNS resource and support MPNS Content staff in its curation.

You will have a degree in Information science, in a scientific discipline or equivalent or relevant experience. You will have significant experience of manipulating, analysing and evaluating large digital data sets, ideally with SQL and relational data structures and will be able to evidence your capability of working with Unix/Java applications or at least the ability to adapt to such technologies. You will be able to demonstrate your ability to employ (and/or modify) data manipulation tools in a variety of technologies, including Access and will have gained experience of modelling databases and business processes, particularly those relevant to Medicinal Plants.

You must be personable and a proactive communicator, able to establish productive working relationships, communicate with clarity and confidence and establish influence with project stakeholders including senior managers, external clients and partners (commercial and non commercial), technical specialists, information managers and scientists.
