JOB DETAILS:

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (Kew) is the world-leader in plant diversity science, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major visitor attraction that shows the importance of plants in all our lives. Kew’s mission is to inspire and deliver science-based plant conservation worldwide, enhancing the quality of life.

The Reflora project aims to make Kew’s collections of Brazilian herbarium specimens widely accessible through capture of digital images and data, whilst building support for advancing botanical resources and research activity involving the diverse Brazilian flora.  We have an opportunity to join the Digital Collections Unit of the Kew Herbarium, to contribute to this and other projects/collections in support of Kew’s Mission and our Breathing Planet Programme.
This post is essential for ensuring that specimen data related to Kew’s Brazilian specimen collections, including any data captured remotely by partners in Brazil, is effectively and efficiently integrated into Kew’s central specimen data repository and therefore accessible for sharing through multiple access routes, both within and outside the organisation.  The role will also involve quality checking of digitised images and specimen data, applying tools and techniques for data cleaning to ensure high quality botanical information.
The postholder will have a relevant degree or equivalent experience, can demonstrate experience of working with complex digital datasets and show evidence of the potential to develop skills for efficient and accurate manipulation and transfer of data.  They will also be a very competent user of Microsoft Office and internet resources, be able to deal with extensive keyboard and computer screen work and be able to handle herbarium specimens.  Good communications skills are required to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
