The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (RBG Kew) is a world famous scientific organisation, internationally respected for its outstanding living collection of plants and Herbarium as well as its scientific expertise in plant diversity, conservation and sustainable development in the UK and around the world. It is also a major international visitor attraction, attracting nearly 2 million visitors a year, and one of the largest organisations of its type in the world. Kew Gardens was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 and celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2009.
Following the adoption of a five year strategic business plan in early 2012 and the appointment of a new Director in September 2012, Kew is looking for exceptional candidates for the post of Director of Kew Gardens’ Horticulture.
The post-holder will be a key member of the Executive Board, reporting to the Director and providing leadership to around 200 staff. They will provide strategic leadership for all aspects of Kew Gardens’ horticultural landscape and play a key role in the generation of income and fundraising. Following an independent review of Kew Gardens’ Horticulture in 2012, the successful candidate will take responsibility for implementing a number of key changes and for the repositioning of Kew’s future horticultural offering.
This is a senior appointment calling for a highly credible leader from the horticulture, environment or heritage world. Knowledge of horticulture as it relates to Kew and experience of leading, managing and developing a diverse team of specialists will be key. Effective communication and relationship building skills and expertise in fundraising will be sought after characteristics. The role will be based at RBG Kew’s main site in South West London.
